Toolkit: d100 Road Encounters table

The complete article in PDF click HERE!

Every GM knows the feeling: the party buys mules, stocks up on iron rations, leaves the safety of the tavern gate, and suddenly you’re staring down a six-day overland trek through the hills. Far too many travel tables are stuffed with passive scenery, flat combat encounters that exist only to burn spell slots, or goofy "gotcha" gags that shatter the mood.

Recently, an evocative 100-entry Road Encounters table originally posted to Reddit by u/Dragodar caught my eye. The bones were full of classic fantasy flavor, but like many sprawling d100 community tables, it suffered from a few structural gremlins at the actual game table: accidental duplicate numbers, 5-entry dead zones, game-breaking disruptions (like a random encounter that vaporizes an entire metropolis), and several entries where the party had zero agency or interaction.

Below is the revised, field-ready version adapted for Portcullis. It is designed to be 100% system-neutral—whether you run B/X, modern d20, an OSR retroclone, or vintage classic rules. Drop it behind your screen for your next wilderness session.

Field Notes & Adjustments

  • Original Credit: Conceived by u/Dragodar on Reddit.
  • Sequential Math Repaired: Fixed duplicate entries (former 56/57 overlaps) to ensure an even 1–100 spread.
  • Actionable Hazards: Converted the inactive 1–5 block into five distinct environmental perils demanding player decisions and resource management.
  • Agency Over Spectacle: Replaced passive fly-bys and dead-end drive-bys with actionable dilemmas, moral friction, and investigation hooks.
  • Contained Stakes: Scaled world-breaking occurrences (such as entire cities swallowed by the Underdark) down to roadside waystations and frontier outposts so your main campaign arc isn't derailed.

Overland March Procedures

For each day of sustained overland travel through contested or wild territory:

  1. Roll 1d4 to determine the number of events or signs encountered during the journey.
  2. Roll 1d100 on the table below for each result. Cross off or swap out results as they occur.
  3. Entries marked with brackets (e.g., [d4]) allow quick sub-table resolution on the fly to establish complication, demeanor, or origin.

Road Encounters (d100)

d100Encounter Description
01Flash Flood / Mudslide: The road ahead is submerged or swept away; finding a stable crossing requires practical scouting and survival checks.
02Blinding Squall / Dust Storm: Visibility drops to 10 feet. Travel pace slows to a crawl, risking exhaustion or separation without guide ropes.
03Unnatural Heatwave: Wells run dry and armor burns to the touch; extra water rations and constitution checks are required to avoid heat illness.

05Freak Cold Snap: Freezing rain coats everything in slick glaze ice, endangering pack mounts and making downhill travel treacherous.
